It was important to differentiate between the clean and slick UGC office and the grunge of the slum and sewers. The upper platform was used exclusively by the UGC staff while the main playing space was used for both the office and street scenes. An open sewer surrounds the stage and tunnels created entrances from under the platform. The pit orchestra was placed under the platform and a pipe skyline was used to add depth and visual interest.
